Dear Le-Win Supporter,

The Lena-Winslow School District has engaged staff and community members to create a vision for a long-term plan that includes a versatile outdoor sports and community complex. This multi-purpose field aims to provide a safe, comfortable, and modern venue for year-round sports, activities, and regional events benefiting students, athletes, fans, and the entire Panther community.

To turn this vision into a reality, the Le-Win Stadium Committee has been formed. Recognizing the limited budget of the school district, the committee, consisting of community members, coaches, and organizational leaders, is leading a fundraising campaign to enhance the complex and achieve the project goals.

To support Lena-Winslow students, athletes, and the community, opportunities to invest in the new activities complex are being offered to businesses, alumni, current students, families, and community members. If you’d like to make a difference, please click the INVEST button.

Thank you for your consideration.

Benefits of this Project:

Necessary Track Upgrade

Le-Win’s current 6-lane track requires a complete overhaul. The asphalt layer is 32 years old and needs replacing. The latex surface is 22 years old and cannot be resurfaced. The recommendation by track building companies is to tear out the existing track and replace the asphalt and surface and improve current drainage. While making these improvements we will be expanding to an 8-lane track. During the spring track and field season, we have over 150 junior high and high school athletes that use the track on a daily basis. An 8-lane track would allow coaches to operate safer practices. This would allow us to run faster, more efficient meets in the regular season and host a first-class IHSA Sectional Championship in the postseason.

Modern Facilities

The turf field will provide a consistent, all-weather playing surface that minimizes injuries and maximizes athlete performance. This durable field will allow for increased usage without compromising safety, ensuring our athletes have the opportunity to practice and compete at their best, regardless of weather conditions.

Versatile Usage

Year-Round Play: Enjoy consistent practice and competition, regardless of weather conditions.

Enhanced Safety: Our top-quality turf reduces injuries and provides a safer playing surface.

Improved Performance: The consistent surface of our turf field and track helps athletes achieve their full potential.

Flag Football: Our community’s Flag Football League currently uses two different parks for games. The new complex would allow us to host all league games in one location.

Retaining & Attracting Families

High school sports are a cornerstone of community unity. Our state-of-the-art sports complex is designed to attract new families and strengthen existing bonds. By investing in a turf field, we’re aligning with the growing trend and ensuring our facilities meet the highest standards for competition and community events. This will not only enhance our school’s reputation but also contribute to increased enrollment.

FieldTurf: Facts vs Myths

This information is sourced from FieldTurf Landscape, the supplier and installer of our turf field.

MYTH: Synthetic turf is abrasive and causes scrapes.

FACT:  A common misconception is that falls on artificial grass will lead to more scrapes and cuts compared to natural grass. But in reality, high-quality turf like FieldTurf Landscape products provide superior cushioning that can actually reduce the risk of these injuries.

Our turf systems are installed with a specialized infill made of tiny sand and rubber granules, which provide a soft, springy surface. For an extra level of protection, a shock-absorbing pad can be installed underneath. This state-of-the-art foundation is proven to reduce impact and abrasions when falls do occur, helping prevent tears and cuts.

MYTH: Artificial grass is full of harmful chemicals.

FACT:  Some parents worry that artificial turf may contain harmful chemicals or VOCs that could pose a risk to children’s health. That may be possible with poor-quality turf, but not with our products here at FieldTurf Landscape.

We thoroughly test our materials to ensure they don’t contain any hazardous substances. We’d love to walk you through our process and safety certifications if you’re interested in the technical details.

And unlike natural grass, caring for artificial grass doesn’t require the use of pesticides or fertilizers that can leave harmful residues.

MYTH: Turf harbors bacteria and germs.

FACT:  A prevalent myth is that artificial grass is less sanitary than natural grass and can harbor harmful bacteria. Again, this is definitely possible with low-quality turf and shoddy installation practices.

In contrast, the permeable backing of our products allow for excellent drainage, preventing the moist conditions bacteria and germs need to thrive. Synthetic lawns are also inhospitable to pests like fleas and ticks that can carry diseases. With a simple rinse, FieldTurf is easy to keep clean and hygienic for all your backyard adventures.

MYTH: Artificial grass gets too hot for safe play.

FACT:  Another concern parents sometimes have is that artificial grass will get excessively hot. Making it uncomfortable or even dangerous for little bare feet. On one hand, artificial turf gets a bit hotter than natural grass simply because there’s no moist soil under the fibers. But it’s way cooler than concrete, asphalt, and other traditional play area surfaces.

MYTH: You will need special cleats to play on the field.

FACT:  No, special cleats are not required or advised.

Play Video

“As a college athlete, I feel playing on turf enhances my game immensely. It creates a consistent durable surface that allows me to run and cut without the threat of worn grass conditions. With turf, maintenance is much easier and will help student-athletes maximize their performance. This can also encourage community engagement, drawing more people to games and events to experience Lena-Winslow’s continued success.”

FAQs

Below are some frequently asked questions regarding the new stadium project.

Why are we spending all this money on this project when there is nothing wrong with the track and field?

Our existing track, which is over 30 years old, is in need of significant upgrades. This upgrade is going to cost the school district about $1.6M.  We believe this is the perfect opportunity to increase the track to 8 lanes and install a durable turf field. These improvements will not only enhance our athletic facilities but also provide a safer and more enjoyable experience for our student-athletes and the entire community.

Will Lena's Flag Football League be able to use the facility for its games?

Yes, the district facility has been approved for use by Lena’s flag football league for their games.

What are the benefits of having a turf field versus a natural grass field?

A turf field has consistent playing conditions, reduces risk of injuries, and improves athlete performance.

Will there be an increase in maintenance costs with the new turf field?

By switching to a turf field, we can significantly reduce ongoing maintenance costs associated with tasks like mowing, fertilizing, watering, and line painting. Although there will be periodic expenses for field refreshes and eventual replacement, fundraising efforts will help mitigate these costs.
